Mountfitchet Castle Day Out

mountfitchet castle

15 of us had a lovely day out at Mountfitchet Castle and the Museum. The Castle is a unique open-air museum experience where you travel back in time over 900 years and witness life in a medieval Motte and Bailey castle. There's a wonderful Norman village hidden behind the castle walls, where you can wander in and out of the many houses and view the scenes, pray in the ancient chapel (the children seemed to enjoy sitting there quietly!), smell the log fires burning and feel the ambience of a bygone lifestyle. There are a number of animals, including tame Fallow deer which can be hand fed, chckens everywhere and other rescued animals that roam freely throughout the 10 acre site. You can try the different armour on and Lynn our vicar enjoyed the jousting armour and horse, before turing into Darth Vadar, whilst Eve and Alison discovered the mirrors don't lie in the Toy Museum!

A Greek Evening

Blue and white flags adorned the church hallA Greek Evening for the party of all parties with an evening of Greek food, fun and fellowship. We were fed delicious Greek cuisine, entertained by an exotic belly-dancer, along with traditional Greek dancing displays and plate smashing. And as the photos reveal, we were all actively encouraged to join in the dancing as an excellent trio of Greek musicians led us to familiar themes such as 'Zorba the Greek'. A night to be remembered!

Contact The Elderly

Contact the Elderly is a nationwide charity solely dedicated to tackling loneliness and isolation among older people aged 75 and above, who live alone, by organising free monthly Sunday afternoon tea parties for small groups within local communities - providing a regular and vital friendship link every month. A couple of times a year we host such an afternoon here at Latton and this year one of the vicar's bantams even did a bit of entertaining too! Each guest is collected from their home by a volunteer driver, and taken to a host's home (or church in our case), where they join a small group for tea, chat and companionship. A great time was had by all and you can read more about 'Contact the Elderly' on our Links

The Jubilee Party in the Park

A few hundred people were at the Party in the Town Park celebrating  the Queen's Jubilee and we were there promoting our Greek project. Liz  and Emily and the family, worked so hard to make our stall so successful. Emily's beautifully decorated cups cakes made up for the lack of stalls there! She made over 200 and they went like hot cakes rather than cup cakes! They tasted absolutely delicious! We were joined throughout the afternoon by members of our church.

Strawberry Tea at the Vicarage

Over 30 of us were treated to a delicious strawberry tea at the vicarage.
The sun shone as we sat in the garden enjoying a relaxing afternoon together.
The children had a wonderful time running around in the gardens woods, playing with the vicars chickens and playing a new game they invented called 'Peg a Priest'!
Emily and Liz had been strawberry picking and served up a delicious tea for us all with a variety of sandwiches, home made cakes and fresh strawberries and cream.

 Day Trip to the Seaside

The weather was superb, the company great fun, the food delicious, the entertainment entertaining, the sea cold and 90 year old Phyllis managed to thrash the vicar in the arcades at 'air hockey'!
We're definitely going to do it again!

Halloween Fun

Our Halloween fancy dress party is always good fun. The children have a wonderful time playing lots of games, enjoying food and carving pumpkins. Then there's the walk through the churchyard, carrying our pumpkins into church for a celebration of light: Jesus the true LIght.

Patronal Festival Evening

What a wonderful evening of fun we all had celebrating our Patronal Festival with an old time musical theme and fish and chip supper. We were entertained by a variety of musical acts and sketches and made £300 for our Greek Project, as Marina's Fish Bar, Garden Terrace Road, Old Harlow, generously donated free of charge all the meals

Our Colchester Zoo Trip

The sun shone throughout the day and the group of us who travelled to Colchester Zoo had a wonderful time. There were so many animals to see! We arrived about 11.15am and left around 4.30pm thoroughly exhausted by al the walking, but delighted by all we had seen and experienced from Cockroaches to Elephants! Colchester Zoo has over 270 species, set in 60 acres of beautiful parkland and lakes. We all had a super day out together.

A Wild Day Out

We at Latton like to have fun days out together and here is one such day, when we visited a wildlife park set in acres of attractive grounds
and featuring one of the largest butterfly houses in the country.
It was a wonderful time with both children and adults enjoying holding butterflies, patting the wildlife and watching the falconry display.

Oh What a Knees Up!

Oh what a knees up

Our Cockney Evening was a huge success enjoyed by both young and old and several people turned up in suitable cockney garb, making a colourful addition to the proceedings.
Our in-house chefs prepared our Tommy Tucker of bangers or pie and mash, while we sang plenty of rousing Ding Dongs especially familiar to the oldies.
During the course of the evening we also played Oranges and Lemons, danced to Hands Knees and Boomps-a-Daisy and the Lambeth Walk.
There was no slacking as we were delightfully accompanied by Anne and Jean on the old Joanna!
Recitations and dramatic performances provided by some with unsuspected talents enlivened our evening still further and provided us with plenty of laughs.
Mind over Matter took on a new meaning and we shall long remember It's not the done thing to go to a funeral in Brahn Boots!
The fancy dress entries paraded for our admiration and the winners were Simon Dinwiddy as the best-dressed man, and Joan Snell in her magnificent almond rock and Flowery Tit for Tat.
Just in case we had any energy left after all this, Lynn encouraged us to join in the Hokey Cokey.
Ron Simmons'performance rounded everything off beautifully and sent us home with a smile. We hardly needed Showing the Way to go Home.

The Latton Barn Dance

latton barn dance

A barn dance?!
Who will come?’……. Well, in fact approximately 40 of us turned up for what turned out to be a fabulous evening, full of fun and laughter. Even those, who for various reasons were unable to dance, enjoyed themselves. The energy levels were high, there was raucous laughter and some good natured teasing throughout as a small group of home-grown leaders led us through a refreshing repertoire of circle, square and line dances. The evening began with the simpler dances and progressed to a greater speed as we all became more skilled, to a point where we were eventually swinging the polka with our partners. Sometimes not all the dances quite worked out as planned, as we saw when Alan and  Chester ended up partnering each other!
